The Dish

With the summer heat, this new gelato cafe is a good place to sooth the palate. Gelato is Italian ice cream made with less butterfat than premium American ice creams. (Gelato has 7 percent to 12 percent butterfat; ice cream 14 percent to 18 percent). Gelato does not have air whipped into it so it is much heavier than most ice creams. This makes it seem richer and smoother.

I was faced with a decision. Which of the 16 flavors to choose? Also, what to put it in: small or large plastic or waffle cone or waffle basket? The prices are $3.50 for small (piccolo), $4.50 for large (grande) plastic or basket. By the pint it costs $9.

When I visited, gelato flavors included Italian pistachio, Tahitian vanilla, cookie dough, creme de menthe, banana caramel praline, triple chocolate, nocciola (hazelnut) and dolce de leche. The sorbetto (sorbet) flavors were Granny Smith apple schnapps, fresh pear and watermelon. I ordered a large waffle basket of cookie dough and shared it with my granddaughter. We were both delighted.
